Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a story that has a group of young boys stranded on an island after their plane crashed on to it. It starts off by setting up a nice peaceful island with a children's society. All and all, their system is working until disagreements between Ralph and Jack. these disagreements end up setting up major plot points that could warrant the need for this book to be banned. However this book should not be banned but instead have harsher age restriction imposed due to graphic descriptions/violence and the moral outlook.
There are multiple examples of violence and graphic images. When Simon accidentally disrupts Jack's feast, he is mistaken for the beast and is attacked while the crowd is chanting “Kill the beast ! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!”(Golding 152) This is violence that kids should not be allowed to have access to due to their lack of understanding. The moral outlook with this story is not for kids as it struggles with the idea of absolute power. A perfect example of this is when Jack comes to power and takes total control over his group of boys. “Power lay in the brown swell of his forearms; authority sat on his shoulder and chattered in his ear like an ape.”(Golding 150) In this passage, Jack feels like a king who can do whatever he wants and no one should question him. Kids of younger ages should learn to cooperate peacefully and not be a tyrant like jack. Lord of the flies is a book that should have harsher age restrictions placed on it because of violence/graphic descriptions and the moral outlook on power.
